Right now, you probably have some
unanswered questions…

Once fully trained in matters of the law and
legal system, a person is called a lawyer
In America other names are also used for instance:
advocate, legal advisor or the more popular, attorney.
The term advocate is used when a lawyer acts on behalf
of the person he is representing in a courtroom; although
once qualified they can all appear in court, as a percentage,
not many decide to pursue this area of law. When acting
as a legal advisor, their responsibility is to provide
legal guidance; if a client has legal issues that need
clarification, this is where they will be of assistance.
Representation in a courtroom is carried out by trial
lawyers; this is an area that requires the advocate
to be quick thinking and a competent speaker. However
a great deal of a trial lawyer's time is spent outside
the court; much of the work involved is looking into
the case with interviews, statements and evidence plus
legal procedures to check and follow.
The legal system affects nearly every aspect
of our society
It affects everyone's life from negotiating a house
purchase to organizing a will and the reason why lawyers
are governed by a very strict code of practice. Owing
to the nature of specialization with legal representatives,
they may never actually attend court; although they
are licensed to represent their clients there.
There are many areas now where a lawyer can specialize;
more exist so not all are listed here:
• Constitutional Law
• Health Issues
• Civil Law
• Adoption
• Identification Theft

The need to practice every area of law in a
courtroom is minimal!
Those who decide to become experts in environmental
law may represent any side relating to the disputed
issue; an example of this group could be:
• Recycling Companies
• U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
• Oil Companies
Part of this work is dealing with land and development
applications; it can also be in a defense capacity when
incidents have happened that require legal representation.
Attorneys are also involved with laws protecting
intellectual property rights
An area much in the news of late; property like digital
media, CD's, computer games and software for instance,
are particularly at risk since the advent of the Internet.
Lawyers who have decided to become experts in Insurance
Law are often used by insurance companies in a permanent
capacity; writing insurance policies, investigating
claims protecting company assets are just a few areas
where their knowledge is useful.
Most attorneys work in the private sector
Working on criminal or civil law; in criminal law,
they represent individuals who have been charged with
crimes and argue their cases in courts of law; civil
law uses their talents to argue in a civil court over
claims, mortgages and other types of litigation.
Where there are high profile cases that may affect
the public, or be in their interest, other legal specialists
operate; these can include law suits and legal representation
that affects the general public for instance. Still
other lawyers use their skills working for non-profit
organizations and other charitable bodies; the work
involved might mean providing legal assistance or representation
to people who are not in a position to help themselves.
